Career/Job Transition – Distance Coaching Package


Life is about facing and managing change—career, personal, family, faith. People at crossroads need a vision—and useful language to describe career and life objectives. They also need proven strategies for presenting themselves in the marketplace and communicating how their strengths/gifts/skills can make a difference for an employer. Participants in the Career/Job Transition Distance Coaching Package will use a variety of ways to engage personal and career transition issues while receiving support and guidance from a trusted expert.

Objective

Your new career. Sky is the limit.The objective for this program is to provide support and structure for an individual either contemplating or already in a career change/job search. The package consist of 3-5, 30 to 60 minute telephone meetings over a 1-3 month period. The package is customized for each client and also includes on-going communications through e-mail.

Program Focus

The program will assist clients to better understand their career/transition interests, skills, values and personal preferences; explore new opportunities/options, clarify objectives and next steps; understand employment and educational options, develop tools like resumes, letters, networking skills; target specific employers, secure meetings/interview and enhance interview competencies.

Consistent with the mission of The Center for Life Transitions, Inc., participants will have the opportunity to explore/examine their faith/spirituality through both exercises and discussion.

The Coaching Package is facilitated by Dr. Tom Bachhuber who lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Face to face meetings can be arranged.

Options for Complementary Introductory Session (30 minutes)

Follow-up sessions will be held over telephone or in person as schedules and circumstances permit.

Flexible Guidelines for Format & Content

  • Introductory Meeting (no charge) –develop working relationship, clarify situation, questions, needs; suggest beginning ideas for moving forward and how the package can be helpful. Complete Readiness Assessment & Intake form, Career Transitions Inventory and Center for Life Transitions Spiritual Checklist.
  • Meetings/Telephone #1-2 – Potential Topics — Discuss details of career situation including personal, family, economic and spiritual variables. Clarify objectives and reasons for transition. Explore career history and new possibilities. Address obstacles and issues. Take on line assessments including Strong Interest Inventory, and/or Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Review new assignments including web research on key issues in exploring new opportunities/industries/cultures.
  • Meetings/Telephone #3-4 – Potential Topics — Go over assessment results and assignments. Discuss options and opportunities in greater depth—evaluate factors for personal career success. Process faith/spiritual ideas and resources. Examine variety of work options and environments. Establish comfort and confidence in pursuing defined job/career targets. Review and refine job search tools e.g. resume, letters, e-mails, web research and networking. Review assignments for next meeting. Establish contacts and networking meetings from client and consultant/coach sources. Go over resumes and written communications tools. Finalize.
  • Meetings/Telephone #5-6 – Potential Topics — Review assignments. Finalize resume. Prepare for interviews and networking. Practice. Develop professional, penetrating questions and responses. Address any new obstacles and issues. Process faith/spiritual ideas and resources. Discuss outcomes from networking meetings. Go over meeting strategies and questions. Identify web and print resources for job openings. Rehearse interview and self-marketing strategies in various situations. Brainstorm key issues and questions to create optimal self-marketing. Agree on contacts for additional networking and interviewing opportunities. Discuss nature of coach/consultant-client follow-up.

Thomas Bachhuber, Ed.D.

Thomas Bachhuber, President of the Board for The Center for Life Transitions, Inc.Tom Bachhuber is President of the Board for The Center for Life Transitions, Inc. and is responsible for overall Center leadership and strategy. His individual coaching/counseling as well as workshops and retreats emphasize career transition. He is presently Director of the Career Development Center at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His work with both universities and corporations has been extensive, providing training, research and recruitment strategies to top companies like Pfizer, Kraft Foods, Merck & Company, Pepsi Cola, McKesson Supply, Sara Lee, Phillips Electronics, Schering-Plough, Deloitte & Touche and Nabisco. He has served as Managing Director and Senior Vice President for National Corporate College Consultants and Management Alliance Group, starting the University Resources practices at each firm. His background in publishing at Ziff-Davis in NYC includes working relationships with over 100 major university career centers throughout the country.

Tom was the tenured Director of the Career Development Center at the University of Maryland and Assistant Dean/Director at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Dr. Bachhuber’s publications include five books–Directions: a Guide to Career Planning (Houghton-Mifflin), A Parents Guide to Helping their Children with Educational and Career Decisions (Abbey Press) and The Best Graduate Business Schools (Macmillan/Simon Schuster).

Tom is an elder at North Branch Reformed Church in North Branch, New Jersey, designing and leading adult education and prayer initiatives. He also led workshops and initiated the Ministries Opportunities Days at New Brunswick Theological Seminary. He was a student and member of the Board at KAIROS: School of Spiritual Formation at the Jesuit Retreat Center in Wernersville, Pennsylvania.

Tom’s Doctorate and Masters in Counseling are from the University of Virginia.
